This year at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), Ford has released the Ranger back into the North American market for the first time since 2011. They are re-entering the midsized truck market competing alongside the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado.
This version of the Ford Ranger, the “T6”, was initially designed by Ford Australia seven years ago. Due to high safety standards in the North American market, this model had to be completely re-engineered before it was released. A “high-strength steel frame backbone to its frame-mounted steel front and rear bumpers” will make this little truck tough.
The power underneath the hood comes from a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder EcoBoost with a 10-speed automatic transmission. They have not announced final horsepower and torque but it is rumored to beat the Tacoma’s stats. This engine is going to give it excellent fuel economy and enough power to compete in the sector.
We hear that it will come in 2WD (FX2) and 4WD (FX4) models on all trim levels. Ford has announced that the FX4 Off-Road Package will include off-road-tuned shocks, all-terrain tires and more. They will also be introducing their new Trail Control, that is designed for hitting rugged terrain at low speeds while allowing the driver to concentrate on steering.
While Ford has not yet announced their MSRP yet, we do have some exciting news for off-road enthusiasts. Yes, the Ranger is just hitting the shores of the USA after a seven-year hiatus but it has still been in production in other countries. What does this mean for future owners of this re-engineered ride? Aftermarket additions galore! Already popular for overland builds, the Ranger will already have aftermarket bumpers, bed caps, locking differentials, and more available for purchase.
